OVERVIEW

What spousal sponsorship covers.

Spousal sponsorship is the IRCC family-class pathway for a Canadian citizen or permanent resident to sponsor their spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner for permanent residence. There are two streams: inland (the applicant is in Canada with valid status and remains here during processing, often with an open work permit) and outland (the applicant is outside Canada, or chooses outland for the right to appeal a refusal).

We work the file from initial assessment through landing — relationship narrative, documentary evidence, the sponsor's undertaking, every IMM form, translations, biometrics scheduling, IRCC correspondence, and any procedural fairness response. Every spousal matter at JSR is handled directly by Jugraj — no junior reviewers, no handoffs.

WHO QUALIFIES

Eligibility — at a glance.

Sponsorship has two sides: requirements the sponsor must meet, and requirements the sponsored person and the relationship itself must meet. We confirm both in your initial assessment.

As the sponsor

  • Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or registered Indian under the Indian Act
  • At least 18 years of age
  • Residing in Canada (or intending to return upon approval, if a citizen abroad)
  • Able to provide the basic needs of the sponsored person and any dependants
  • Not in default on a previous sponsorship undertaking, immigration loan, or family support
  • Not subject to a removal order, undischarged bankruptcy, or certain criminal convictions

As the sponsored partner

  • Spouse — legally married, with a marriage recognized in Canada
  • Common-law partner — cohabiting in a conjugal relationship for at least 12 continuous months
  • Conjugal partner — in a committed relationship for ≥12 months where marriage or cohabitation is not possible (typically due to immigration or legal barriers)
  • Admissible to Canada on medical, criminal, and security grounds
  • Relationship is genuine and was not entered into primarily for immigration purposes
OUR PROCESS

How we work a spousal file.

Spousal applications live or die on the strength of the relationship evidence and the consistency of the paperwork. Here is the four-step path every JSR spousal file follows.

01

Initial assessment

We review the relationship history, status in Canada, sponsor eligibility, and pick inland vs outland with you. We flag any inadmissibility risks early.

02

Application preparation

Full IMM form set (IMM 1344, IMM 5532, IMM 5669 and supporting), relationship narrative, statutory declarations, sponsor financials, translations, and exhibits.

03

Submission to IRCC

We submit and pay fees, schedule biometrics, file the open work permit where the applicant is in Canada, and represent you on every IRCC communication.

04

Decision & landing

We respond to procedural fairness letters, follow up on stalled files, and walk you through landing, PR card issuance, and the next steps after approval.
