Initial study permits via Student Direct Stream (SDS) or the regular stream, extensions before expiry, DLI and program changes, restoration of status, and companion documents for spouses and dependants — all handled by a regulated immigration consultant.
A study permit is the authorisation foreign nationals need to study at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada for programs longer than six months. The permit specifies the institution, the level of study, and the conditions you must keep — full-time enrolment, academic standing, and program of study.
JSR handles the full pathway: initial applications under SDS or the regular stream, extensions before expiry, change of DLI or program, restoration of status if a permit lapsed, and the work-permit add-ons that come with the territory (co-op work permits, off-campus work eligibility, spousal open work permits). Every file is handled directly by Jugraj — no junior reviewers.
Most study-permit cases fall into two buckets: getting in (the first permit), and staying compliant while you're already in Canada (extensions, changes, restoration). We handle both, plus the work-permit and dependent permit add-ons that come along.
First-time applicants from outside Canada.
Already in Canada and your status needs work.
Four steps cover most study-permit files. SDS applications can move in weeks for eligible countries; regular stream and extensions take longer depending on visa office and time of year.
Confirm acceptance at a Designated Learning Institution, check PAL / TAL requirements, verify the program qualifies for PGWP, and identify whether SDS or the regular stream applies.
Letter of Acceptance, tuition receipt or first-year payment, GIC certificate, proof of first-year living-cost funds, study plan / statement of purpose, language test results if SDS.
Submit online via IRCC. Book biometrics. Add medical exam if the program is six months or more and your country requires it. Police certificates where applicable.
For applicants outside Canada — we walk you through port-of-entry activation. For in-Canada extensions — the new permit is mailed. We follow up on stalled files and respond to procedural fairness letters.
The exact checklist depends on whether you're applying via SDS or the regular stream, your country, and your program. This is the working inventory most study-permit files need.
Study permit government fees are payable to IRCC at the time of application. Biometrics is a separate fee for first-time applicants (and once every 10 years after that).
IRCC fees as of April 30, 2026. Tuition, GIC, language tests, medical exam, and police certificates are billed separately by their providers.
