September 17, 2026: Canada Disability Benefit Recipients Get a $150 Lump Sum
Employment and Social Development Canada will start paying a one-time $150 Canada Disability Benefit (CDB) supplement next week. On the official CDB page, last modified September 10, 2026, the department states that if you received a CDB payment between July 2025 and June 2026, a $150 payment will be issued on September 17, 2026. You do not apply. A letter will follow.
The September 10 news release, page dated 2026-09-10, says the money is meant to offset the cost of getting the disability tax credit (DTC). The DTC certificate is what opens the CDB door. Amendments to the Canada Disability Benefit Regulations were published in the Canada Gazette, Part II, on July 1, 2026. ESDC's program page says those changes took legal effect on September 1, 2026.
This is a payment date, not a new monthly rate. The regular CDB allocation is separate.
Who is paid on September 17, and who waits
ESDC is splitting the supplement into two waves.
| Wave | Who | When ESDC says it pays |
|---|---|---|
| First | Eligible people who received a CDB payment in July 2025 to June 2026 | September 17, 2026 |
| Second | People whose first CDB payment came after June 2026, and people approved on a new or renewed DTC certificate | Winter 2027 |
You can still qualify for the $150 if you are no longer on the monthly benefit. ESDC's example is a person who received only one payment in July 2025. The program page puts it this way: anyone who received a CDB payment before September 1, 2026 remains eligible for the supplement even if payments have stopped.
Two limits sit beside that rule:
- The supplement is $150 for each approved DTC certificate that entitled you to a CDB payment. A recertification that later qualifies you can create another $150, which ESDC places in the winter 2027 wave.
- Supplemental payments are not payable for people who died before September 2026.
To date, ESDC says 335,650 people have received CDB payments totalling $813,074,098.
What the $150 is not
The lump sum is not your monthly CDB. On the amount page, ESDC states that for July 2026 to June 2027 the maximum monthly allocation is $204.20. That figure is the inflation-adjusted monthly maximum. It is calculated from adjusted family net income on the prior-year tax return.
The same page lists the working-income exemptions used in that calculation for the current payment period: $10,210 if you are single, and $14,294 combined if you have a spouse or common-law partner. Income thresholds remain $23,000 (single) and $32,500 (couple). Amounts above those lines are reduced. Confirm the live table before you budget. The $150 supplement itself is fixed and is not indexed each July.
You still need a valid path into the program before any of those numbers matter.
Who can get onto the CDB at all
The eligibility page requires all of the following, in plain terms:
- You are 18 to 64.
- You have been approved for the DTC.
- You are a resident of Canada for income-tax purposes, and you fall into one listed status group: Canadian citizen, permanent resident, a person registered or entitled to be registered under the Indian Act, a protected person, or a temporary resident who has lived in Canada throughout the previous 18 months.
- You, and your spouse or common-law partner if you have one, have filed the required federal tax return. For current payments that means the 2025 return.
The first month of CDB eligibility was June 2025. Payments started in July 2025. ESDC may pay up to 24 months of back allocation from the month it receives your application, but not for months before June 2025.
That 18-month temporary-resident rule is the line many work-permit and study-permit holders miss. A visitor record or a short permit does not, by itself, meet it. Status plus the 18-month residence test both have to be true.
What to do this week
If you were paid between July 2025 and June 2026, check that Service Canada has your current direct-deposit details and mailing address. ESDC says the September 17 payment is automatic. If the deposit does not arrive, use the letter as the starting point, not a third-party form.
If you have never received CDB, the supplement is not a shortcut. Get the DTC decision first, file the tax returns, then apply for the CDB. Do not pay anyone who claims they can "unlock" the $150 for a fee. ESDC links its fraud page from the CDB site for a reason.
This update does not change IRCC study, work, or PR rules. It is a federal income-support payment. A CDB deposit can still matter on an immigration file if an officer is testing available funds or public-benefit history, so keep the letter with your records.
If you need a commissioner for a supporting affidavit, or you want the status and residence piece checked before you apply, contact JSR Immigration & Legals through our consultation page or the citizenship and PR card service page.
