IRCC Is Reviewing a Glitch in French-Language Draw #418: What Affected Candidates Should Know
If you were waiting on a French-language Express Entry invitation in late May and it never arrived, you are not imagining things. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has confirmed it is reviewing a technical error in Express Entry round #418 — the French-language proficiency draw held on May 28, 2026 — after some eligible candidates were skipped by the automated system and did not receive their Invitations to Apply (ITAs).
This post explains, in plain language, what is known so far, what it likely means if you were in the pool, and the steps to take while IRCC completes its review. It is general information, not legal advice — always confirm details on the official IRCC rounds-of-invitations page.
What happened in draw #418
Round #418 was a category-based draw for French-language proficiency — one of the categories IRCC uses to prioritise candidates who can work in French. The published results were:
- Date: May 28, 2026
- Category: French-language proficiency
- Invitations issued: 4,500
- CRS cut-off: 409
On paper, that is a strong, ordinary draw. The problem surfaced afterward: IRCC acknowledged a system-level error in how ITAs were issued. According to the department, the automated selection process skipped over some profiles that should have been invited — candidates who met the French-language category requirement and sat at or above the 409 cut-off, but who never received an invitation.
IRCC has not publicly defined the scope of the error — that is, whether it touched a small handful of profiles or a larger group. The department said its technical analysts are reviewing system logs to identify affected profiles and find the root cause, and that the matter is being treated with urgency. No completion timeline has been given.
What this does — and doesn't — mean for you
It is easy to read a headline like this and panic. A few things are worth keeping in perspective:
- If you received an ITA from draw #418, it is valid. The error is about candidates who were missed, not about invitations being clawed back. Keep working on your application within your deadline.
- If you believe you were skipped, you have not lost your place. Your Express Entry profile remains active in the pool with your CRS score intact. A draw you were eligible for does not "use up" your profile.
- IRCC has not yet said how it will fix it. As of this review, the department has not confirmed whether affected candidates will get out-of-cycle invitations, be prioritised in the next French-language round, or have profiles adjusted. That decision is IRCC's to make and announce.
What IRCC says affected candidates should do
The department's guidance has been consistent and short: do not take action right now. Specifically, IRCC has advised that if you think you were affected, you do not need to:
- resubmit or recreate your Express Entry profile,
- update or re-upload documents, or
- contact IRCC directly about the glitch.

Resubmitting a profile in a panic can actually work against you — it can reset your profile date, which affects tie-breaking, and it creates duplicate or inconsistent records. The safer path is to leave your active profile alone and watch for official updates.
Smart housekeeping while you wait
You can't speed up IRCC's review, but you can make sure you're ready the moment something moves:
- Keep your profile accurate and current. Confirm your work history, education, and family information still match your supporting documents.
- Watch your language-test expiry. French and English test results are valid for two years. If yours are close to expiring, plan a retake so an invitation never catches you with a lapsed result.
- Keep settlement funds and documents in order so you can act fast if you're invited in a future round.
- Follow the official source, not rumours. The IRCC rounds page is where any correction or follow-up draw will be confirmed. Third-party predictions are not official.
The bigger picture
This is a useful reminder that Express Entry is an automated system, and automated systems occasionally fail. It also shows why French-language ability remains one of the strongest advantages in the 2026 pool — these category draws have carried notably lower cut-offs than general draws. If you've been on the fence about improving your French, the category's value is one reason candidates keep investing in it.
For now, the watchword for affected candidates is patience: your profile is safe, your score stands, and the fix is IRCC's to announce.
