Nova Scotia Introduces 12-Month EOI Validity Period: What You Need to Know (Effective May 1, 2026)
Nova Scotia Introduces 12-Month EOI Validity Period: What You Need to Know
If you've submitted an Expression of Interest (EOI) for a Nova Scotia Provincial Nominee Program (NS PNP), an important update is coming into effect on May 1, 2026 — and it could directly impact your immigration journey.
At JSR Immigration, we're committed to keeping you informed about every policy change that affects your pathway to Canada. Here's a complete breakdown of what's changing and what you should do next.
What Is Changing?
Effective May 1, 2026, Nova Scotia will introduce a 12-month validity period for all Expressions of Interest. This update is part of the province's effort to maintain a current, accurate EOI pool that reflects real labour market needs and supports efficient nomination processing in 2026 and beyond.
How Does the Transition Work?
Nova Scotia has introduced a phased approach to ensure a fair transition for candidates already in the system:
EOIs Submitted Before May 1, 2024 If your EOI was submitted more than two years ago (before May 1, 2024), it will be closed effective May 1, 2026. This is not a refusal. You are still eligible to submit a fresh EOI at any time, provided you continue to meet the program requirements.
EOIs Submitted Between May 1, 2024 and April 30, 2026 Your EOI will remain active and will not require any action at this time. If you are not selected before the deadline, your EOI will expire on April 30, 2027. You only need to take action if your personal circumstances (such as job offer, NOC code, or language scores) have changed.
EOIs Submitted On or After May 1, 2026 All new EOIs will be subject to the new 12-month validity window from the date of submission. If your EOI is not selected within 12 months, it will expire and be removed from the pool. You may resubmit a new EOI as long as you remain eligible.
Does an Expired EOI Mean a Refusal?
Absolutely not. An expired or closed EOI is not a refusal of your immigration application. An EOI is simply an expression of your interest in the program — it is not a nomination or a formal application. You may submit a new EOI at any time as long as you meet the eligibility criteria.
What Should You Do Now?
- Check your EOI submission date. If it was submitted before May 1, 2024, prepare to resubmit after May 1, 2026.
- Update your profile if your circumstances have changed (new job offer, improved language test scores, updated work experience, etc.).
- Monitor program draws regularly, as Nova Scotia continues to issue invitations to top-ranked candidates.
- Contact JSR Immigration for a professional assessment of your updated profile and eligibility.
