26 Canada-U.S. Border Crossings Changed Their Hours on November 1, 2026

The Canada Border Services Agency changed the opening and closing times at 26 land ports of entry on November 1, 2026. Nine crossings are in British Columbia, four in Alberta and thirteen in Manitoba. The new hours took effect at 2:00 a.m. local time and stay in place until 2:00 a.m. on March 14, 2027, when the United States moves its clocks forward again.

The change is about clocks, not enforcement. British Columbia, Alberta and Manitoba adopted permanent year-round daylight time this year. The United States still changes its clocks each spring and fall. The CBSA states in its British Columbia release, its Alberta release and its Manitoba release, each dated October 9, 2026, that adjusting the operating hours in the fall and in the spring keeps Canadian service hours aligned with the neighbouring U.S. ports year-round.

The crossing date controls, not the announcement date

The releases were published on October 9. The old hours still applied until the effective moment, 2:00 a.m. local time on November 1, 2026. If you crossed before then, the previous schedule governed your trip. From November 1, use the tables below. The schedule flips again on March 14, 2027, so a crossing that is open late tonight may not be open late in April.

Commercial windows exclude holidays. The CBSA notes the times reflect local provincial time zones, so a crossing near a time-zone boundary may not match the clock on the other side.

What this means for your trip

  • Check the hours before you leave. Several crossings that used to open early now open at 9:00 or 10:00 a.m. Arriving outside the posted window means an unplanned detour to the next open port.
  • If a port is closed, use an alternate port of entry. The CBSA says exactly that in all three releases. Do not wait at a closed crossing.
  • Commercial drivers should plan around weekday windows. Most of the 26 crossings take commercial traffic only Monday to Friday, and some only until 5:30 p.m. Weekend loads need a 7-day commercial crossing such as Aldergrove, Fraser, Pleasant Camp or Carway.
  • Emergencies are handled. The CBSA works with emergency services on both sides of the border so ambulances and responders can cross during an emergency.
  • Alignment has a purpose. If a traveller is found inadmissible and must return immediately, coordinated hours mean the return crossing is open.

This change does not alter anyone's status, documents or admissibility. A work permit, visitor visa or super visa is unaffected. Only the building hours moved. A missed window can still mean a missed appointment, a late commercial delivery or an unexpected overnight in a border town, so plan the crossing itself, not just the destination.

Super visa holders and parents on extended visits should take particular care, since many of these smaller crossings are the ones families in rural Manitoba, the Kootenays and southern Alberta actually use, while the big 24-hour ports are unaffected.
